For the third consecutive season, the NPSL West Region Final will feature Sacramento Gold FC. It will also be the third straight all-Golden Gate Conference final, with the 4-seed Gold slated to host the 6-seed CD Aguiluchos USA. The 2015 West Region Final is set for Saturday, July 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Capital Christian High School.
The Gold advanced to the region final with a 3-1 win over the 2-seed San Diego Flash Saturday. Jason Jones followed his two-goal performance against 5-seed FC Tacoma 253 the previous week with another brace against the Flash. Danny Mititelu also scored his first goal of the season, which turned out to be the game-winner.
As for Aguiluchos, they have been the Cinderalla of these 2015 playoffs. The Oakland-based club made a statement with a clear-cut 4-0 win over 3-seed Deportivo Coras USA U-23 last week. Aguiluchos followed it up with a shocking upset over the 1-seed Sonoma County Sol Saturday. Ross Middlemiss scored against his old squad and helped Aguiluhcos win 2-2 (8-7) on penalties.
The Gold and Aguiluchos have met twice this season. A controversial, physical 2-2 draw in Sacramento was followed by a 3-1 Gold win in the regular season finale in Oakland. The road win featured an eight-minute hat trick from Nico Gonzalez.
Sacramento is bidding for back-to-back West Region crowns. Last season, the Gold avenged a region final defeat the previous year with a 2-0 win over the Sol. Aguiluchos, meanwhile, are making their first ever region final in their first ever postseason appearance.
The West Region winners will advance to the national semifinals, taking on the other three region kings to determine this season's national champion. Once the four finalists are determined, they will be re-seeded based on regular season point total. The winners of the 1-4 and 2-3 semifinals will play for the 2015 NPSL National Championship.
