Sacramento Gold FC's thrilling2-2 drawwith Napa Valley 1839 was not the only match in the West Region over the weekend. It was, however, the only one Golden Gate Conference, meaning this week's "Around the West" is all about the clubs down south. Here's a recap of last week's games, as well as a look at what's in store this week.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Orange County FC visited first place Riverside Coras on Sunday May 7th in a long-awaited match-up of two unbeaten teams.
Riverside Coras got on the board two minutes into the match when a long throw-in from Cody Shelton went into the OCFC penalty area and Fernando Cabello headed the ball off the far post and into the net to give Riverside a 1-0 lead. OCFC keeper Brandon Gomez made a last-ditch effort to clear the ball out but the linesman confirmed that the ball had crossed the line.
OCFC answered three minutes later when a left footed cross from winger Andrew Hernandez was headed home by striker Alessandro Canale to level the score at 1-1.
The match became a tight defensive display after the two scores but midfielder Armando Flores missed an excellent chance to put OCFC in the lead when he misjudged a cross in the Riverside penalty area..
TEMPE, Ariz. -- FC Arizona is back to its winning ways and extended its undefeated streak to eight matches following a 4-0 victory over SoCal SC on Saturday night.
FC Arizona wasted no time scoring just six seconds into the match, courtesy of Kenny McAvoy. In the 32nd minute, new addition, George Jermy, scored in his debut when he tapped in a cross from Cesar Mexia. Two minutes after this, Alejandro Aguilar took advantage of a free ball in the SoCal SC half. he dribbled into the box and chipped the goalkeeper for the third goal in the half.
It didn't take long for FC Arizona to score again in the second half as Jermy served up a brilliant cross to Ari Sanchez who headed home his second goal on the season in the 53rd minute.
FC Arizona played some stout defense for the remainder of the match and cruised to a 4-0 victory.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The PROS returned to Mission Bay Stadium in victorious fashion as they topped City of Angels FC 7-3 on Saturday, May 6.
“The guys came out firing. I thought the first half was tremendous, very electric in front of goal,” said Head Coach Ziggy Korytoski.
Ten minutes into the match, David Luquen scored off an unassisted breakaway, running the entire length of the PROS sideline before capitalizing off his steal. PROS took an early 1-0 lead.
Shortly after Luquen’s goal, Luan Oliveira scored another unassisted goal in minute 19. Then in minute 25 Luquen scored again, increasing the lead to 3-0 and marking the third unassisted goal of the night.
This week will see two different schedules start. The 2017 Northwest Conference schedule begins with a pair of games, and three West Region teams will take part in the first round of the 2017 U.S. Open Cup.
