Sacramento Gold FC is still alive for the West Region playoffs, though it needs some this weekend to get there. Meanwhile, the other seven playoff teams have been determined, though positioning is still very much up in the air. Here's a recap of last week's games, as well as a look at what's in store this week.
GOLDEN GATE CONFERENCE
SAN LEANDRO, Calif. -- No recap available at this time.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- In just their first season in existence, FC Arizona has clinched the Southwest Conference Division following a 2-0 win over Riverside on Sunday night. Alejandro Aguilar scored the go-ahead goal in the 85th minute from a brilliant Cesar Mexia assist and Mexia secured the victory with a goal in the second minute of stoppage time.
FC Arizona also finished the regular season with an undefeated record (12-0-4) and they have clinched the #1 seed and home field in the West Region playoffs.
The first round of the playoffs will be played Friday, July 14 at 8:00 p.m. at Mesa Community College. Click here to purchase tickets.
The fate of the 2017 regular season came down to one match on Sunday night as a win or draw against Riverside would clinch the division for FC Arizona. A Riverside win, plus a win next week and they would be division champions.
CHINO, Calif. -- Orange County FC got back to their winning ways with a record setting 13-0 win over SC Corinthians USA on July 1st. One week after a tough loss to Albion, OCFC got off to a perfect start when striker Jose Montes found the back of the net after seven minutes to give his side a 1-0 lead.
Twelve minutes later Montes turned provider when his pass was finished off by midfielder Connor Gordon to extend the lead to 2-0. The roles were reversed in the 34th minute when a run from Connor Gordon on the right side ended with a pass that was fired into the net by Montes. OCFC led 3-0 at the half but the score could have been a lot higher if it weren’t for the excellent reflex saves from Corinthians keeper Edgar Lima.
The second half would be a much different story as OCFC’s second half substitutes would prove to be too much for Corinthians to handle. It only took one minute for Tristan Weber to finish off a through ball from Connor Gordon as OCFC caught the home side sleeping. Striker Alessandro Canale scored a hat-trick with goals in the 54th, 56th, and 60th minutes to give OCFC a 7-0 lead. Amazingly, all goals were assisted by midfielder Andrew Hernandez.
“We have a good connection,” said Hernandez. “I know his runs and he knows my runs so we work off each other.”
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- No recap available at this time.
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Having only just played each other four days prior in round one of the Portland Derby, both teams came out with their pressure high to fight for the win. A modified player lineup for both teams from the previous match up gave fits to both sides as it presented an unpredictable game.
Possession was only slightly favored to FCM Portland in the first 15 minutes, but PDX FC had the stronger counter attacks with Nick Evans leading their charge. FCM Portland was able to hold off the attacks with a new back line that was well-synchronized. Both teams utilized the flanks to move upfield quickly. At the 27th minute mark, FCM Portland made a charge at the PDX FC goal and found themselves getting knocked down just outside the box. FCM’s Ryo Asai took the free kick and converted, putting FCM up by one, a scoreline which held for the remainder of the half.
BURIEN, Wash. -- Kitsap Soccer Club completed a perfect record away from home during the NPSL regular season and it knocking on the door of the postseason in its inaugural campaign.
Pierce County led 2-1 at halftime before second-half goals from Tyler LaCourse, Jorge Ruiz and Alvaro Macias proved the difference. Chuy Sanchez also scored for Kitsap, which earned its third straight victory.
Set up by a nifty cross from Romario Lomeli, Ruiz scored the go-ahead strike from 20 yards out for his team-leading third goal of the season. It pushed Kitsap to a perfect 5-0 record away from Bremerton’s Gordon Field this season.
The victory pushes Kitsap Soccer Club (5-1-2) to the brink of qualifying for the postseason in its inaugural NPSL campaign.
