SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Sacramento Gold FC’s first road trip of the 2018 NPSL season also saw its first loss of the season, as El Farolito handed the Gold a 3-0 defeat Saturday at Boxer Stadium.
Sacramento got the first big chance in the fifth minute when Kaba Alkebulan dribbled down the left side of the goal, coming within just a few yards of the goal. Alkebulan fired a shot that sailed across the face of the goal, but it neither went in nor hit the feet of a teammate.
Farolito made the Gold pay with its first opportunity in the 21st minute with a long ball down the left side. Edson Cardona outran the defense and fired a shot that somehow snuck by Sacramento goalkeeper Philip Bru and into the far post for a 1-0 lead.
The home squad kept up the pressure until it broke through again in the 38th minute. Arnhold Rivas fired a quick shot from the top of the box that got through traffic and ended up in the back of the net. Farilito would go into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
They nearly made it 3-0 at the hour mark after they found themselves wide open thanks to a long ball to the right side of the box. However, a curling shot to the far post went just wide.
From there, the match got more and more physical, with both teams needing to be separated at multiple times. Both attacks seemed to get their punch taken away from them as a result.
Farolito nearly got a third goal thanks to a terrible giveaway by the Gold in the waning minutes of play. After collecting the ball in its box, Sacramento passed it straight to a Farolito attacker all alone at the penalty spot. Fortunately for the Gold, Bru was able to come up with a huge save and collect the ball after a wild scramble.
However, the referee called for a free kick just outside the box for a foul during the scramble. Farolito then did make Sacramento pay, as Alexandre Gonzalez fired a curling shot that Bru could do nothing about into the back of the net to make it a 3-0 final.
Sacramento will now head back to the friendly confines of home for a match against the third Golden Gate Conference newcomer in as many games, FC Davis. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 21 at Capital Christian High School.
