As Sacramento Gold FC gears up for the 2019 NPSL season, let's recap some of the key moments during the offseason.
LEAGUE EXECUTIVE SHAKEUP INCLUDES GOLD OWNER
As part of a scheduled reshuffling of the executive leadership of the NPSL, several team owners have assumed league-wide duties. That includes Sacramento Gold FC owner John Nunan, who was named league secretary. Nunan, who took over as owner of the Gold in 2012, is the league's first executive from a Western team.
“We are very pleased with this board,” said new NPSL chairman Kenneth Farrell. “We truly have an excellent team and have been working together in a very deliberate manner with great enthusiasm and chemistry. It is with great delight to add John Nunan to the Board of the Directors. He brings much knowledge and is our first West Coast executive."
Gold fans will get to cheer their team on against two new opponents in 2019. Two expansion franchises have joined the Golden Gate Conference -- one from the Bay Area and the other from the Central Valley.
Stockton FC is the latest sports franchise to call port city home, and the first soccer team to do so since the California Cougars of the PASL. The club was founded by lifelong Stockton resident Chris Hernandez and renowned pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu. Stockton is now the third NPSL team in our immediate region, including FC Davis.
San Ramon FC marks another Bay Area rival, one that can potentially be a fierce opponent. The club leadership includes Kevin Montler (Legal Director of Global Music for Google), Dan Chamberlain (former Director of Soccer Operations for the San Jose Earthquakes Academy), and Mani Salimpour (former Iran U17 National Team member). The area is familiar with world class athletes, with the likes of MLS goalkeeper David Bingham, NFL linebacker Khalil Mack, and NHL center Auston Matthews among those who are from San Ramon.
While two new rivals are joining the conference, one Golden Gate stalwart is leaving. CD Aguiluchos USA, which joined the NPSL in 2013, has left the league. During their time in the NPSL, Aguiluchos evolved into one of the Gold's biggest threats, winning the West Region twice and creating a fierce rivalry. Games between the two squads were filled with passion and noise from both sides of the crowd.
Sacramento Gold FC will play 12 games during the regular season, six home games and six road contests. The full schedule will be unveiled this weekend, so stay tuned!
