Gold wins Causeway Classico with late goal

May 6, 2019

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento Gold FC remains undefeated in the Causeway Classico, handing FC Davis its first loss of the season 2-1 Saturday at Capital Christian High School.

The visitors had the better chances early, with Noah Wilson launching a shot that forced a great save from Sacramento goalkeeper Hector Grajeda. However, Grajeda would be beat to make it 1-0 just three minutes letter, when Evan Barrett connected on the long chip after getting in behind the defense thanks to a long pass.

The Gold would work to get back into the game, eventually capitalizing on a takeaway by Nico Gonzalez in the 31st minute. Gonzalez found Matt Wiesenfarth in the box, with the forward making a move and sending a rolling shot at goal. Wiesenfarth’s attempt snuck by the Davis goalkeeper on the left post and tied things at 1-1.

The score nearly became 2-1 twice several times before the end of the half. In the 38th minute, Wiesenfarth had a chance to get his second of the night on a breakaway, but put his effort wide of the net. On the ensuing attack by Davis, Grajeda had to stretch to deflect another rocket of a shot away from goal. Another save in stoppage time – this one a header – meant a deadlock after 45 minutes.

The pace slowed down to start the second half, with neither team getting a great chance at a second goal until the 65th minute. That’s when – off a corner kick – Riley Kraft sent a header right to the upper left corner of the goal. However, a defender was able to parry the attempt away in time.

In the 83rd minute, Grajeda made perhaps his best effort of the night, first stopping a long-distance effort from Justin Wright before halting a follow-up attempt from Joe Skvarna to keep things level.

Those saves would prove crucial, as the home squad finally broke the tie in the 89th minute, when Chase Gray headed home a long cross into the box. Gray and the Gold celebrated, then did what they needed to do to hold onto the result.

After a bye week, Sacramento Gold FC will next be on the road, this time in wine country. The Gold will take on Napa Valley 1839 Saturday, May 18 at Dodd Stadium, kickoff set for 7 p.m.
