Causeway Classico Ends in Draw

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The first Causeway Classico was an exciting, back-and-forth war of attrition that ended with Sacramento Gold FC and FC Davis splitting the points in a 1-1 draw Saturday at Capital Christian High School.

Anthony Chinchilla scored the home team’s first goal of the season, finishing off a beautiful cross from the left side of the box by D.J. Villegas in the 57th minute. It also came less than two minutes after the visitors opened the scoring with a cross from Evan Alvarez, which somehow snuck by several players before bouncing into the back of the net.

The Gold had excellent chances before and after the goals to add to the scoring, mainly from Solomi Olajide. In the 48th minute, Matt Wiesenfarth found Olajide near the right post, but Davis goalkeeper Zack Price was able to snuff out the attempt. Then in the 61st minute, another excellent cross from Villegas was met by a booming header from Olajide. However, the ball struck the crossbar and bounced out.

Off a corner kick less than five minutes later, Chris Christian launched a shot that hit the far post and bouncing right to Villegas. Who fired off multiple shots that ricocheted off a number of players in the box. Unfortunately for the home fans, Sacramento couldn’t get it past the goal line.

Davis had a few good opportunities in the final 15 minutes of play. In the 78th minute, Kennedy Chongo for free down the left side, but sent his shot wide right. With both teams having short benches, the last stretch became a defensive struggle. But thanks to the efforts of Dylan Wood and Gold goalkeeper Dominik Jakubek, who made a key stop on Ty Shikashio in the 85th minute, the defense held firm.

Sacramento will be back at home for another rivalry game, against the Sonoma County Sol, on Saturday, March 7. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Capital Christian High School.

NOTE: Before the game, both teams as well as all four officials took part in 24 seconds of silence while standing at the 24-yard-line in honor of Kobe Bryant, his daughter, Gianna, and the seven other people killed in the January 26th helicopter crash.
